Snowy Day in Late January

A powdery snow fell all day yesterday, about 5-6 inches for us. This picture was taken at sunset, as I went out to shovel.

Home of the Brave Quilts

Today was a Home of the Brave Quilt sewing session. We met last month to cut out and piece blocks. Today we sewed the blocks and sashing together and completed two tops. They will be quilted and presented to family members of two District of Columbia soldiers who died in Afghanistan.

Cheddar Cheese and Crackers, Complete

When the cat's away, the Bernina will play! Last weekend, husband and son went skiing and I stayed home, not very reluctantly. I finished this little doll quilt top which took way longer than I expected and was much more challenging than I thought it would be. But a good challenge. Thank you, Lori, of Humble Quilts for providing the instructions. There were a couple bumps in the road. I ran out of one of the double pinks and had to rummage through my UFOs and was lucky enough to find the very same fabric. When I ran out of one of the blues, I dug through my wastebasket and pieced a tiny square just like they did in the olden days! I won't even mention how I messed up when arranging the blocks. Anyway, I love the result and will start quilting it this weekend.

Sewing the Binding

I am sewing the binding of my Quilt-A-Long Nine Patch, begun last summer inspired by Amanda of Crazy Mom Quilts. Her blog is now discontinued but you can still see pictures of her beautiful quilts. I will show you the whole quilt when the binding is finished.

Still January

I have been sewing up a storm and will show you the results very soon. Yesterday I visited two quilt shops, The Artful Quilter and The Quilt Patch, both in northern Virginia. The Artful Quilter features bright, whimsical contemporary fabric and The Quilt Patch has something for everyone. I sampled a bit from both!

First Snow of 2010

We woke up to a little dusting of snow here in the nation's capital. Just enough to make everything look pretty but not enough to stick on the roads. This is the third time it's snowed this winter - love it!

Cheddar Cheese and Crackers

Yesterday, before and after a very unpleasant visit to the dentist, I worked on this quilt-a-long doll quilt posted by Lori of Humble Quilts. The blocks are 4 1/2" and the quilt is one of those where all the blocks have to be planned out ahead of time - not my usual style. Of course, I love the Civil War color scheme. I wonder what will come next? Posted by Picasa

Lazy Sunday

This is the last day of a very long and fun-filled winter break. Tomorrow it's back to school and the good old routine. Today will be spent watching football, doing laundry, and cooking a delicious dinner for the family.
